Thematic Network on
Critical Arctic Studies

What are Critical Arctic Studies?

Our approach to critical research is to challenge the mainstream, simplified, and stereotypical understandings of the Arctic by questioning the underlying assumptions of current depictions of the region and its development, engaging diverse standpoints and voices for reflective assessments of policies and practices, and elevating the importance of the Arctic and its future to the global scale.

The thematic network aims at promoting teaching and supervision for the growth of critical Arctic studies, and provides a forum for cooperation in teaching, supervision, and research as well as for networking and mentorship between scholars at different stages in their academic careers.

The joint activities are suitable for a range of disciplines, such as political science, sociology, anthropology, gender studies, Sami and indigenous studies, environmental management, legal studies, geography, and architecture.

UArctic Thematic Network on Critical Arctic Studies (CAS) was established in 2021 to strengthen and promote multidisciplinary critical studies of the Arctic.

This is an activity led by the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland.
