Call for Arctic Circle panels

The CAS team has organized a panel at the Arctic Circle conference twice. Our CAS partner, Page Wilson from the University of Iceland, has prepared two panel proposals for the Arctic Circle Assembly 2025, which is held in mid-October.

Please take a look at the two proposals below and contact Page (plw@hi.is) if you are interested in contributing to these panels. The proposals, with committed presenters, need to be submitted by the conference organizers by the end of this month. Panel Title 1: Arctic Colonialities: Past, Present, Future? Some Critical Interventions

Description: The experiences of colonialism, neo-colonialism and post-colonialism have all shaped the Arctic. This is something the region has in common with other world regions, though specific details among them may differ. In this interdisciplinary panel, scholars reflect critically on these Arctic experiences, and the ongoing legacy of colonialities, with a view to providing greater insight into the region in contemporary context.

Panel Title 2: Death of the Arctic? Critical Interventions in Uncertain Times

Description: Ongoing tensions impeding the operation of the Arctic Council, amongst other developments, have given rise to the suggestion that ‘the Arctic’ – in both its physical/geopolitical and conceptual senses – is dying. However, this narrow focus belies the very wide range of fields in which ‘the Arctic’ remains important – such as in ocean politics, environmental studies, politics of indigeneity. In this panel, scholars will present work from across disciplinary divides to demonstrate the continued relevance of the Arctic, thereby providing a critique of the ‘death of the Arctic’ narrative.
